Taupō's restorative dentistry specialists
Teeth wear down, chip, crack and decay. Left alone, a damaged tooth stops doing its job: chewing gets harder, the teeth either side take more load than they were built for, and what began as a small repair turns into a bigger one. Restorative dentistry is about returning a tooth to full function and making it look as though it was never damaged.
We will always talk you through your options first, including what happens if you do nothing, so the decision is yours to make with the full picture in front of you.
What we can restore
- Fillings: tooth-coloured composite that seals decay and blends with the tooth around it
- Crowns: a full cap for a tooth that is cracked, heavily filled, or has had root canal treatment
- Bridges: replacing a missing tooth by anchoring to the teeth on either side
- Implant restorations: a crown fitted to an implant when the whole tooth, root and all, is gone
- Dentures and partial dentures: removable options when several teeth are missing
- Inlays and onlays: for damage too large for a filling but not enough to need a full crown
Signs a tooth may need restoring
- Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet that lingers after the source is gone
- A rough edge you keep finding with your tongue, or a visible chip
- Pain when you bite down on one particular spot
- An old filling that has darkened, cracked or fallen out
- Food packing into the same gap at every meal
How long does it take?
A filling is usually a single appointment. Crowns, bridges and implant work are staged across a few visits while the laboratory work is made. You will get a written treatment plan with costs before anything begins, so there are no surprises partway through.

How long will a filling last?
A well-placed composite filling commonly lasts somewhere between five and fifteen years, but it depends on how large it is, where it sits in the mouth, how heavily you grind and how well the area is cleaned. We check existing fillings at every examination and tell you when one is starting to fail rather than waiting for it to break.
Do I need a crown, or will a filling do?
It comes down to how much healthy tooth is left. A filling relies on the surrounding tooth for support, so once a large portion has gone the tooth is at risk of splitting and a crown that caps the whole thing is the safer choice. We will show you what we are seeing and explain why we are recommending one over the other.
What are my options for a missing tooth?
Broadly three: a bridge anchored to the neighbouring teeth, an implant that replaces the root as well as the crown, or a partial denture. Each has trade-offs in cost, longevity and how much work is done to the teeth around the gap. Leaving the gap is also an option we will discuss honestly, along with what tends to happen over time.
Will my restoration match my other teeth?
Yes, that is the goal. Composite fillings and crowns are shade-matched to the teeth around them. If you are planning whitening as well, do the whitening first, because restorations do not change colour afterwards and we want to match them to your final shade.
Does ACC cover damage from an accident?
Often, yes. If a tooth has been damaged in an accident you may qualify for funded treatment through ACC. Phone us and our receptionist will talk you through booking an appointment under an ACC claim. See our finance options for the other schemes we work with.
What will it cost?
It depends entirely on what the tooth needs, so we quote before we start rather than after. You will receive a written treatment plan setting out each stage and its cost, and if the total is significant we can talk through the funding options available to you.
