Dental Hygiene in Taupō
Full oral health care, prevention and treatment.
Professional cleaning, gum care and prevention from our registered dental hygienist, right in the heart of Taupō. A regular hygiene visit is the simplest thing you can do to keep your own teeth for life.
Taupō's dental hygiene specialists
Tartar (plaque that has hardened onto the tooth) builds up around the gumline even when you brush and floss well. Left in place it irritates the gums, and over time that irritation turns into bleeding, bad breath, gum disease and the loss of the bone that holds your teeth steady. A professional clean is the most reliable way to stop that process before it starts.
Our hygienist has been caring for Taupō patients for many years. A hygiene appointment is more than a polish. It is a proper assessment of your gums and a plan for keeping them healthy between visits.
What happens at a hygiene appointment
- An assessment of your gum health, including pocket depths where they are needed
- Removal of plaque and hardened tartar from above and below the gumline
- Polishing to lift surface staining from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking
- Fluoride application where it will help
- Brushing, flossing and interdental advice tailored to your mouth, not a generic script
How often should you come in?
Six months suits most people. If you have had gum disease, if you smoke, if you are wearing braces or if you are prone to build-up, we may suggest every three or four months. We will tell you honestly what your mouth needs rather than booking you in for the sake of it.
Signs it is time to book
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- Breath that stays bad no matter what you do
- Gums that look red, puffy or have started to recede
- Visible build-up or staining along the gumline
- A tooth that feels like it has moved or loosened
Bleeding gums are common, but they are not normal. They are usually the first sign of gum disease, and at that stage it is still reversible.

How often should I see the hygienist?
Every six months suits most people. If you have had gum disease, if you smoke, if you wear braces or if you build up tartar quickly, we may suggest every three to four months. Your hygienist will tell you what your mouth actually needs rather than booking you in for the sake of it.
Does a hygiene clean hurt?
For most people it is comfortable: some scraping, a little vibration and cold water. If your gums are inflamed or your teeth are sensitive we can numb the area first, so tell us and we will take care of it. Mild sensitivity for a day or two afterwards is normal and settles quickly.
What is the difference between a hygiene appointment and a check-up?
A check-up is with a dentist, who examines your teeth, takes any radiographs needed and diagnoses problems. A hygiene appointment is a thorough professional clean and an assessment of your gum health. Many of our patients book the two together to save a trip.
Will a clean make my teeth whiter?
A clean lifts surface staining from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking, so teeth usually look brighter and feel smoother afterwards. It does not change the natural shade of the tooth underneath. That is what teeth whitening is for.
My gums bleed when I brush. Should I worry?
Bleeding gums are common, but they are not normal. They are usually the first sign of gingivitis, which is reversible with a professional clean and a change to how you clean at home. Left alone it can progress to gum disease and bone loss, so it is worth getting looked at.
Is hygiene treatment funded for under 18s?
Routine dental care is free for teenagers up to their eighteenth birthday, and hygiene care forms part of that treatment plan. Register your 13 to 17 year old with us and we will look after the rest. Our finance options also cover Winz quotes, ACC claims and the Taupō pregnant woman’s scheme.
