Teeth Whitening in Taupō

Taupō's teeth whitening specialists

Teeth pick up colour over the years. Tea, coffee, red wine, cola and tobacco stain the surface, while the tooth underneath naturally darkens with age. Professional whitening lifts both, safely and under supervision.

The difference between professional whitening and a supermarket kit is control. We check first that your teeth and gums are healthy enough, we match the strength to your teeth, and we monitor how you respond, which is what keeps the result even and the sensitivity manageable.

Before you whiten

  • Any decay or gum problems are treated first, because whitening an unhealthy mouth is uncomfortable and can be harmful
  • A professional clean comes first, so the whitening works on the tooth rather than on surface deposits
  • If you are planning crowns, veneers or new fillings at the front of your mouth, whiten first so the restorations can be matched to your final shade

What to expect

We will talk through the options at your consultation and recommend the approach that suits your teeth and your timeframe. Some sensitivity during and shortly after treatment is normal and settles within a day or two; tell us if you are prone to it and we will plan around it.

Making it last

Results vary from person to person, and habits matter more than anything. Cutting back on the things that stained the teeth in the first place, cleaning well and keeping up regular hygiene visits will all stretch the result out considerably.

Will whitening damage my enamel?

Professionally supervised whitening does not damage enamel when it is used correctly. That supervision is the point: we check your teeth are suitable first and match the treatment to them, which is exactly what an over-the-counter kit cannot do.

How long will the result last?

It depends almost entirely on habits. Heavy tea, coffee, red wine or tobacco use will pull the shade back sooner. Most people find the result holds well for a year or more, and top-ups can extend it.

Will it whiten my crowns and fillings?

No. Whitening only works on natural tooth. Crowns, veneers and white fillings stay exactly the shade they were made, which is why we recommend whitening before any new restoration work at the front of the mouth so everything can be matched afterwards.

Does whitening make teeth sensitive?

Some sensitivity during and just after treatment is common and normally settles within a day or two. If you already have sensitive teeth, say so at the consultation and we will adjust the approach.

Is whitening suitable for everyone?

Not always. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and it is not suitable if you have untreated decay or gum disease. Those get treated first. Heavy internal staining may respond better to cosmetic treatment than to whitening.

Is whitening funded for under 18s?

No. Routine dental care is free for teenagers up to their eighteenth birthday, but tooth whitening is not covered by that scheme.
