Taupō's cosmetic dentistry specialists

A good cosmetic result rarely comes from one dramatic intervention. More often it is several small refinements (a chip smoothed, a gap closed, a discoloured old filling replaced, a shade lifted) that together make a smile look like itself on a good day.

We start by asking what actually bothers you. People are often surprised how much can be achieved with something modest, and we would rather do the conservative thing well than talk you into more treatment than you need.

What cosmetic dentistry can address

  • Chips and uneven edges: reshaped or rebuilt with composite, often in a single visit
  • Gaps: closed with bonding, or with orthodontic treatment where the whole bite needs addressing
  • Discolouration: lifted with professional whitening, or masked with veneers where the staining is internal
  • Old, darkened fillings: replaced with tooth-coloured composite that blends in
  • Worn or short teeth: built back up to a natural length and shape
  • Teeth that look crowded or out of line: improved with veneers or straightening, depending on the cause

Bonding or veneers?

Composite bonding is added directly to the tooth in one appointment, costs less and removes little or no natural tooth. Veneers are made in a laboratory, last longer and handle more significant changes in colour and shape, but they involve preparing the tooth and cost more. Which one is right depends on the tooth, the result you want and your budget, and we will go through both.

Getting the order right

Healthy first, then cosmetic. Any decay or gum disease gets treated before cosmetic work begins. Whitening comes before new restorations at the front of the mouth, because crowns, veneers and fillings do not change colour afterwards and need matching to your final shade.

Where should I start?

With a conversation. Come in and tell us what you notice when you look at your smile. That is usually a different thing from what a dentist would pick out. We will tell you what is realistic, what it involves and what it costs before you commit to anything.

Will it look natural?

That is the entire point. Shade, shape, texture and proportion are all matched to your face and your other teeth. If you want a noticeably brighter result we can do that too, but the default is a smile that looks like yours rather than an obvious dental job.

How long does cosmetic work last?

Composite bonding typically lasts several years before it needs refreshing, and can stain over time. Porcelain veneers and crowns last considerably longer. Both depend on how you look after them: cleaning well, avoiding using your teeth as tools, and wearing a night splint if you grind.

Do I have to have my teeth filed down?

Not necessarily. Composite bonding often needs little or no preparation of the natural tooth. Porcelain veneers do require some tooth to be removed, and that is irreversible, which is why we go through it carefully before you decide.

Can you fix one tooth that is a different colour?

Often yes. A single darkened tooth is usually one that has had trauma or root canal treatment. Options include internal whitening, a veneer or a crown, and which is best depends on why the tooth changed colour.

Is cosmetic treatment funded?

Generally not. Routine dental care is free for under 18s but cosmetic work and whitening are not covered by that scheme. Where damage was caused by an accident, ACC may contribute. We quote in writing before starting.
