Orthodontics & Braces in Taupō

Taupō's orthodontics and braces specialists

Crowded, crooked or protruding teeth are harder to clean, wear unevenly and can put strain on the jaw joint. Straightening them is not only about appearance. A bite that meets properly is a mouth that lasts longer.

We use Damon brackets together with Copper-NiTi wires, which apply very light, continuous forces to move teeth gently into position. Lighter forces generally mean less discomfort and fewer adjustment visits than traditional systems.

What orthodontic treatment can correct

  • Crowded or overlapping teeth
  • Gaps and spacing
  • Overbite, underbite and crossbite
  • Teeth that protrude and are vulnerable to knocks
  • A bite that wears unevenly or clicks

How treatment runs

It starts with a consultation. We take records, talk through what is achievable and set out the likely length of treatment and the cost in writing before anything is fitted. If we take your case on you will receive consent forms that set out the payment terms, and treatment begins once those are signed.

From there it is a series of short adjustment visits, usually every six to ten weeks, until the teeth are where they should be. Retainers follow, and they matter, because teeth drift back if they are not held.

Is it too late for adults?

No. Teeth move at any age, provided the gums and supporting bone are healthy. Plenty of our orthodontic patients are adults who were never able to have treatment as teenagers.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Most cases run somewhere between twelve and twenty-four months, though a minor correction can be quicker and a complex bite can take longer. We will give you a realistic estimate at your consultation rather than a number designed to sound appealing.

Am I too old for braces?

Not at all. Healthy teeth move at any age. What matters is the condition of your gums and the bone supporting them, which is why we check those thoroughly first. Sometimes a course of hygiene treatment comes before orthodontics.

Do braces hurt?

There is usually some tenderness for a few days after fitting and after each adjustment, and it responds well to ordinary pain relief and soft food. The light-force system we use is designed to keep that to a minimum.

Will I need a retainer afterwards?

Yes, and this is the part people underestimate. Teeth have a memory and will drift back towards their old position if nothing holds them. Wearing your retainer as instructed is what protects the investment you have just made.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. We offer monthly payment plans for orthodontic treatment. The terms are discussed at the initial consultation stages and set out in the consent form you sign before treatment starts. See our finance options for more.

Is orthodontic treatment free for under 18s?

No. Routine dental care is free for teenagers up to their eighteenth birthday, but orthodontic treatment is not covered by that scheme. Damage from an accident may be covered by ACC. We will quote in writing before anything begins.
